L.A. Focus Charities
L.A. Focus Charities is an L.A.-based, minority/female-operated 501C3. Through its outreach efforts and Annual First Ladies High Tea (which attracts upwards of 800 women) —L.A. Focus Charities serves to provide resources and information to empower churches in their efforts to coalesce the collective power of the faith community toward issues that are impacting their surrounding communities, from curbing drop-out rates to homelessness, child sex trafficking and combating health disparities. Additionally, L.A. Focus has worked with organizations like the First Star UCLA Bruin Guardian Scholars Academy and numerous L.A. County church youth groups with our Annual Essay First Ladies High Tea Essay Contest, where participating teen girls have the opportunity to interface with women who serve as mentors, role models, leaders and influencers in their communities, in a manner that can enrich their communities and change the trajectory of their lives.
At the helm is Lisa Collins, who founded Focus on the Word, Inc. and serves as publisher of L.A. Focus Newspaper, a 30-year strong, community-based monthly publication with a readership of 120,000. In addition to traditional circulation stops, the newspaper gets to the heart of the African American community via its strongest institution: the church, with distribution in more than 200 churches.
Ms. Collins consults with politicians, local government officials and corporations on outreaching to the faith community with context specific assistance on a wide range of topics from media and messaging to targeted community engagement. She has extensive expertise in creating participative processes to galvanize faith leaders around issues and resources key to community and church empowerment.
